Fifteen great flags now operate in Paris. Our honest read on who stays where, and why.
Paris is the only city where the state itself certifies luxury — the Distinction Palace, held by a dozen-odd hotels — and the only city where our directory runs fifteen properties deep. Choosing between them is a matter of temperament, not ranking. Herewith, the temperaments.
For the grand entrance
Cheval Blanc Paris is the modern statement: seventy-two keys above La Samaritaine, Peter Marino interiors, the Dior Spa, and the best Seine-facing bathtubs in France. Four Seasons George V remains the full-orchestra alternative — three Michelin-starred restaurants under one roof and flowers by the tonne.
For the classicists
Le Bristol is the discreet one, the palace the French themselves book: Epicure's three stars, the rooftop pool like a yacht deck, and a garden courtyard that resets the nervous system. Le Meurice and Plaza Athénée carry the Dorchester Collection standard opposite the Tuileries and on Avenue Montaigne respectively — the latter still the fashion-week address. Hôtel de Crillon, reborn under Rosewood, owns Place de la Concorde and the most beautiful bar in the city.
The quiet luxuries
The Peninsula polishes its Kléber landmark to a Hong Kong standard of service. Lutetia, newly under Mandarin Oriental management, is the only palace on the Left Bank and feels it — artists' Paris, Saint-Germain at the door. Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme and the Prince de Galles are the connoisseur plays: smaller, calmer, and materially easier to upgrade.
Slightly out of frame
Le Royal Monceau brings Starck wit near the Étoile; Bulgari does contemporary Milan on George V; Hôtel de Berri is the Luxury Collection's townhouse secret off the Champs-Élysées; and the Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace sits literally at the gates of Versailles for the château pilgrimage.
Where a documented programme applies, we state the confirmed inclusions in the proposal. Tell us the occasion; Paris does not forgive the wrong hotel.
